Jaw contouring surgery can reshape or rebalance the contours of the jaw. The lower jaw is a prominence that makes our lower face look good if it’s in the right balance with other features of our face. Patients who have a jaw that protrudes too much or not enough, or a jaw that is too long or too short, may seek a jaw contouring procedure that will put their jaw in better balance with the rest of their facial features.

Augmenting the chin can be done with bony surgery, or an implant, or even non-surgical things like injectable fillers. We also can reduce the jaw, which can really only be done with surgery. And in the lateral jaw, i.e., the width of the jaw, we can augment that or we can reduce it. We’ve got all those options.

What we actually do is based on an individualized consultation with the patient wherein we diagnose their situation, and how we can best balance their facial features.

Is jawline surgery painful?

Well, it depends on what we’re doing. If we choose to augment the chin with a chin implant, that’s not a particularly painful surgery. When I do bony surgery to augment or reduce the jawline, it’s generally a little more painful and there’s a longer recovery.

What is jawline surgery recovery like?

Recovery from jawline surgery varies based on what we do. For example, if I’m going to use a drill to take the chin down and make it more feminine, making it smaller because the chin is too big, I’ve got to dissect a lot of the chin muscles. In regards to recovery, in that situation, it takes a while for those muscles to return to full function. They won’t feel quite normal to us, until three to five weeks after surgery. And I often have a long discussion with my patient about what to expect.

However, chin implant surgery generally has a very quick recovery.

How much does jaw contouring surgery cost?

It depends entirely on what we’re doing. If I’m going to reduce the whole chin and reduce the lateral jaw, if I’m doing a facial feminization surgery, that could cost a lot. It may cost $9,000-10,000 to perform a complete chin reduction surgery. If I’m doing a chin implant, just augmenting the chin a little bit, that may be $4,000-4,500. But often, I will combine jaw contouring surgery with a little bit of liposuction in the neck. And that liposuction will be an extra charge. So, it depends on the procedure packages for that individual, and that requires an individualized consultation
