Therapeutic Natural Light

As many of us spend more and more time indoors in front of blue-light-generating screens and less time outside in the sun, our circadian rhythm and cellular energy production become confused, leading to fatigue, headaches, insomnia, and other health concerns. Red light therapy at Sykes Facial Plastic Surgery uses a medical-grade device to safely and effectively help you take in more therapeutic light wavelengths without UV rays, chemicals, or side effects.

What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy shines near-infrared wavelengths into the skin to stimulate cellular regeneration and healing. It works because the mitochondria, or the “power generator” cells, absorb the light photons. Soaking up the red light increases the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) – the cellular fuel – which energizes the cells to perform their functions better. This allows the cells to repair and regenerate more efficiently, boosting your energy, improving your skin, and more.

Benefits of Red Light Therapy

  • Stimulate melatonin for better sleep
  • Enhance collagen and elastin production
  • Improve your skin’s texture and tone for a more even complexion
  • Smooth wrinkles and lines in the skin
  • Reduce inflammation and joint pain
  • Increase circulation
  • Boost physical performance and mental wellness
  • Speed up wound healing and recovery

Am I a Candidate?

Overall, red light therapy is a safe and effective treatment for a wide range of people. However, patients with photo-sensitive skin or taking medications or supplements that increase their photosensitivity must take precautions before undergoing this treatment.

During your consultation, Dr. Sykes will perform a thorough physical exam. For the ideal outcome, you will want to disclose your medications, so Dr. Sykes can assess whether the treatment will be safe for you.

What is the Procedure Like?

During your session, you will lie in an infrared LED bed, much like a tanning bed, but without harmful UV rays. The lights will be warm, allowing you to rest comfortably.

The calming red light penetrates up to 8-10mm deep into the skin, increasing circulation by formulating new capillaries and stimulating collagen production to repair damaged tissues.

The sessions usually last up to 20 minutes, but in cases where a handheld red light therapy device is used, your session could last anywhere between 5-30 minutes.

The Recovery Process

The best part of the red light therapy treatment is that it is non-invasive and requires no downtime. You may experience some changes to your skin immediately and further noticeable improvements over the following weeks. The best results come from multiple weekly treatments over the course of two to three months.
